November 15th 2011 proved to be a tense day of legal wrangling for Occupy Wall Street and the office of the Mayor of New York City, Michael Bloomberg. At stake was the right of protesters to enter Zuccotti Park (aka Liberty Plaza), which had been the location of their encampment for two months. For much of the day, it was barricaded from public access by metal fences and a heavy police presence, despite a justice ruling that demonstrators be allowed to return.
While lawyers thrashed it out in the courtrooms, thousands of people took to the streets of Manhattan in a march which stretched from Liberty Plaza into Broadway. They were there to support the 150 demonstrators evicted from the area in the early hours of the morning. They were joined by 12,000 international viewers of the Global Revolution Livestream.
At 6.30am, Justice Lucy Billings granted a temporary restraining order against the Mayor Bloomberg's office. It was in response to a clearance of Liberty Plaza, undertaken by the New York Police Department at 1am that same morning. Many protesters had been cuffed and detained, while their belongings were bundled into skips and taken into storage. This included 5000 books which constituted the Occupation's library, as well as their tents and backpacks.
