A survey conducted by the American Dental Association (ADA) reveals that dental education tuition and fees for the academic year 2007 to 2008 ranged from $25,322 to $40,737. Pursuing a degree in Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or its equivalent, Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) is indeed expensive. Becoming a dentist doesn't have to break the bank, however. Low-cost dental schools are available to provide less-expensive but quality education.

Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry

As of the academic year 2010 to 2011, DDS tuition and fees at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Dentistry is just $15,676 for in-state students but $27,633 for out-of-state students. Advanced Dental Education program students, in-state or out-of-state, are charged $3,422 per semester. VCU School of Dentistry traces its root back to 1893 when a dental department was introduced in the University College of Medicine. VCU itself was formed after the Medical College of Virginia and Richmond Professional Institute merged in 1968.
